Bias Checking
As with all sources, newspapers can have biases or misrepresent information. Because of this, it's important to check the reputation of publications, as well as verify the individual claims in articles. Follow the steps outlined in the SIFT method on our Misinformation, Disinformation, and Bias page, and look out for the warning signs listed there. This will help you analyze any information you come across (like headlines on social media), not just articles published in mainstream news sources.
For popular publications, the library recommends using this published by Ad Fontes Media, to compare the reliability (referring to truthfulness/accuracy) and political bias of multiple news sources at the same time. While it has data on thousands of news sources, it only allows 5 free searches a day. We've attached a static copy of the chart with the most common news sources at the bottom of this page for you to reference. The library recommends only using sources in the green box of the chart (top three rows, middle four columns) for research.
Sources at or below the orange line (bottom three rows) should only be used if you are specifically analyzing inaccurate/biased sources. These news outlets are likely to spread misinformation, disinformation, and biased perspectives, and should not be trusted at face value.
